Why Is a Hair Consultation Important?
A hair change should feel exciting, but it's natural to have questions. A consultation is more than a quick chat before your appointment; it's an important planning step that helps us understand your expectations, assess what's achievable and protect the condition of your hair.
We recommend a consultation if you're:
- New to Hair & The Hound and getting to know your stylist.
- Considering a significant cut, restyle or colour change.
- Looking to correct a previous salon result or at-home colour.
- Unsure which service or technique would best suit your hair.
- Hoping for a more manageable style or a colour that requires less maintenance.
Consultations aren't just for colour transformations, either. Even if you're booking a cut and blow-dry or a simple trim, it's an opportunity to discuss the shape you want, how your hair behaves and how you prefer to style it.
What Happens During Your Consultation?
Every consultation is different because every client is different. Your stylist will guide the conversation around your needs, taking time to understand your ideas and explain their recommendations clearly.
Understanding Your Hair Goals
Words such as lighter, warmer, softer and low-maintenance can mean different things to different people. We'll talk through what you have in mind, look at inspiration photos if you have them and clarify the details that will help us get on the same page.
We'll also discuss your everyday routine, including how you usually style your hair, how often you want to visit the salon and how much time you'd like to spend on maintenance at home.
Assessing Your Hair's Condition
Your hair's current condition and treatment history help determine which services are suitable and what results are realistic.
Depending on your hair and the service you're considering, your stylist may assess dryness, breakage, elasticity, porosity and the effects of previous chemical treatments. This helps us recommend an appropriate approach, rather than pursuing a result your hair may not be ready for.
Some transformations need more than one appointment to achieve the desired result while maintaining hair condition. If that applies to you, we'll explain the options and help you understand the process before you commit.
Discussing Timing, Pricing and Maintenance
We want you to know what to expect before your appointment. During your consultation, we'll discuss the recommended service, likely appointment time, expected cost and the maintenance involved.
The time and cost of a colour service can vary depending on your hair's length, thickness, existing colour and the techniques needed to achieve your goal. It may take more than one appointment to achieve your desired look. A personalised consultation helps us provide a more accurate estimate based on your hair and the result you're looking for.
Colour Safety: Skin & Strand Tests
If you're planning a colour service, we'll also discuss any necessary testing before your appointment.
Skin Testing
New colour clients need an allergy alert test before colour services can go ahead, even if they've had their hair coloured elsewhere. If you're new to hair colour or haven't had your hair coloured in the last six months or more, please contact us to arrange your test at least 48 hours before your appointment. We'll confirm the relevant requirements with you.
Strand Testing
If your colour history is uncertain or you're considering colour correction, a strand test may be recommended to help assess how your hair responds to the proposed process.
It's particularly helpful to tell us if you've used box dyes, colour-depositing masks, toning shampoos, henna, metallic dye products or had multiple colour treatments. The more we understand about your hair history, the better informed our recommendations can be.
How to Prepare For Your Consultation
There's no need to arrive with every detail decided. A few simple things can help us make the most of our time together.
- Bring inspiration photos. Save pictures of looks you love, as well as examples you're not keen on. Both help us understand your preferences around colour, shape, brightness and finish.
- Be open about your hair history. Let us know about previous salon colours, at-home products, smoothing treatments and anything else that may have affected your hair.
- Think about your routine. Tell us how often you'd like to visit the salon and how much time you want to spend styling your hair at home.
- Show us how your hair naturally behaves. If you usually wear it wavy, air-dried or straightened, let us know. This helps us recommend a cut and style that works for your everyday life.
